What is 5S?
The 5S methodology is one of the basis methodologies from the Lean Management for Work Place Organisation. The idea of the methodology is to improve efficiency and quality in the work place. As such, special focus is placed on the areas of order, cleanliness, ergonomics and safety. 5S is the starting point for the identification of activities which do not add value and provides the origin for ongoing improvement in processes. The advantage of the methodology is that it can be implemented in both companies that are production orientated, as well as those which are service orientated.
The meaning of 5S:
- Seiri: Sorting
- Seito: Straightening
- Seiso: Systematic cleaning
- Seiketsu: Standardising
- Shitsuke: Self-discipline
5S helps to configure the work place through:
- reducing to the level of necessity
- determining where it is necessary and
- defining how much is necessary
